PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Here at Lipstick Mixtapes we not only want you to be the best you can be…. but we’re Makeup Artists, so we also want you to LOOK the best that you can look, inside and out of course. That being said, we feel there’s a 4 alarm blaze going on in the makeup world, and we are here to extinguish that fire for ya! Its probably hands down one of the most popular trends in makeup, its a staple in any cosmetic kit, it was probably your first vanity purchase, as well as one of the easiest ones to pull of… BUT, ALL NUDE LIPS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL!!!!!! Nude on Alicia Keys, nude on Alek Wek, nude on Sieanna Miller and nude on Oprah are all gonna be completely different colors. The term “nude” is all relative anyway because it all depends on what your natural lip color is.
Lets examine that for a moment, shall we…?

This beautiful picture of Alicia Keys features her wearing a nude lip. Yes it has a slight pink shade to it but that’s because the natural color of her lip is pink! Look at the majority of her photos, there’s nothing she can do about it honestly… unless she puts on a color. Her lip will only do so much in the nude range with that pink coming through… ask Safia Michelle.

…I wish you WOULD put a pinkish ANYTHING on Alek Wek and call it nude. Do you see the color that is on her lips in this image? It’s actually more of a deeper brown like the color of her skin. Its also the natural color of her lips…..
SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING?

These images of Oprah and Sieanna Miller show them wearing the “typical” overall effect of what people are seeking when they say “I want a nude lip”. But Oprah doesn’t have naturally pink lips and neither does Sieanna Miller! They are more of a flesh toned shade. So their nudes will differ all together unless they’re going for a more editorial look or something more specific (that’s a whole other ballgame).
**Discaimer** Not to say that anyone who has pink lips can’t have a brown based nude lip or vise versa…. 2 things to remember.
1) God didn’t give everybody everything, be realistic about what your working with… how much effort do you want to put into a lip (ie: Lip liner, Lipstick and Lipgloss vs Lipgloss alone)? Glosses and certain lipstick textures are so sheer they can’t saturate the lip enough to totally cover your natural shade without it coming through and being apart of the finished look **Remember Alicia Keys, Safia Michelle, Meagan B?**

2) Know what you are looking for when you go lipstick shopping. Don’t drive your Makeup Artist crazy trying to get them to decipher what it is that your looking for when you don’t even know…. at least give us an image (on paper, yes a photograph)of what you’re going for. Don’t you take one to your hair stylist?? Same deal.
That being said, we challenge all of you reading this to examine the color of your own lips, keep it real with yourself, and find a nude that works for YOU. Stop trying to match the color Beyonce has on, she gets photoshop.
Love and Lipstick,
Meagan B & Safia Michelle

Wow I have a slew of new products that I’ve been using on my hair lately. As most of you know, Meagan B and I are attempting to go au natural! YeAh but it has not been as easy an road for me as it has been for her so I have to concoct a few things to make my hair act right so here’s a list of a few things that have been helping to get it right I’ll post a product everyday so you can know what I’m using. First up is a new shampoo and conditioner bye Creme of Nature. I started with the Kiwi & Citrus Ultra moisturizing shampoo for dry, brittle hair. I really love it because it is super moisturizing not greasy I still have relaxed hair at the top so I need lots of hydration. I followed that with Creme of Nature Moisture Extreme conditioner for dry, brittle, and dehydrated hair my hair on the sides and back is all natural. I need all the moisture I can get! I love these products all though they’re new that Creme of Nature smell is the same it reminds of when I was a lil girl and my mom used these products on my hair, and it was so healthy and thick. I’m trying to get back to that. I loved having relaxed hair, but i like change so i’m trying something different. I don’t really care as long as I look good, so right now I’m trying out a different look, who knows I may have a weave next week ; )

Hey beauties! It’s your girl Meagan B coming at you today with some for sure FA-real-ness! Its an issue that I’m so passionate about, it gives me HEARTBURN, lol! There’s no secret about it, for so long black women have struggled with the issue on the texture of our hair. We have become conditioned to degrade our self-image with words like “good hair” and “bad hair”… why can’t we just have hair?? As many of you may know if you saw the pictures from the Tom Joyner Expo, my hair is 100% natural.

I’m so proud of that! Really I am, because it WHO I am….. come on now, our hair doesn’t grow out straight, lol! But don’t get it twisted!!!…. I will get a weave QUICK….. because it gives my hair a break and allows me to put it away for a while. I haven’t always been natural tho, and I don’t condemn anyone who is relaxed. For the majority of my life I was like many other women going to the salon for the 3-4 month touch- up with the “creamy crack” (relaxer) treatment!
The other day at work a lady paid me a compliment on my hair but I couldn’t appreciate it because of what she said about herself after. She said, ” I really like your hair, if my hair would curl up like that I would go natural too”. To which I replied “your hair will curl or wave up, but how would you know if you continue to relax?” To make a long story short, she proceeded to tell me that she knew she didn’t have the type of hair that could go natural because her roots are too “nappy” when they come in. *Lion growl* “GRRRRRR!!!!!!”
OMG are you kidding me??? We black women come in so many different shades of color that we embrace and we should also learn to embrace our many different hair textures too. At the end of the day, we have the most versatile hair!!! We can wear our hair in its natural state or we can blow dry and flat iron it straight. (Disclaimer: Always engage in healthy hair practices over look any day).
I am a part of a really cool hair forum called “K.I.S.S. (See LM faves). Its a site that promotes healthy and simple hair practices in women of color. With the permission of the women presented, I want to show the variety in black hair. These women are REAL….. au naturale….. and they are beautiful. I would like to encourage our readers to do some research and educate themselves on this issue…. we can have the best of both worlds!
And lets all make sure to go see Chris Rocks Movie “Good Hair” when it hits theaters soon!

Absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!
